How to collect customer photos after a Shopify purchase
· By the Socialphotos team
A post-purchase photo request gives customers a direct way to show how they wear, style, or use your product. Send the request after delivery, explain what kind of photo would be useful, and link to a short upload form that works without a social account.
The complete workflow is: create an upload page, add its link to your post-purchase message, test the customer experience, and review every submission before publishing it.
We build Socialphotos, a customer photo and video gallery app for Shopify. This guide uses Socialphotos Upload Pages for the direct-upload steps and separates collection from publication.
Decide what you want customers to submit
A specific request is easier to act on than “send us some UGC.” Ask for a photo that helps another shopper understand the product:
- An outfit being worn in the customer's own style.
- Furniture, fabric, or decor in the customer's room.
- Equipment being used for its intended activity.
- A short video showing the product in use.
Tell customers where the content may appear and provide clear submission terms. Do not promise that every submission will be featured.
Create a customer photo upload link
In Socialphotos, open Upload Pages, create a page, and give it a descriptive internal name such as “Post-purchase email.” Preview the form, then copy its public link.
The customer opens this dedicated page and submits a photo or video without signing in to Socialphotos, Shopify, or Instagram. The page name becomes the submission's Source label inside your account. If you collect through several placements, separately named Upload Pages can help you distinguish their submissions.
Follow the complete Upload Pages setup guide.
Use the upload link anywhere you reach customers
An Upload Page uses a normal shareable URL, so a post-purchase email is only one possible placement. You can link to the same page from:
- Linked text, a button, banner, or image on your website.
- Post-purchase, delivery follow-up, newsletter, or customer-support emails.
- SMS, direct messages, and social profiles.
- QR codes on packaging, printed inserts, event signs, or in-store displays.
Use separate, clearly named Upload Pages when you want each placement or campaign to have its own Source label in Socialphotos. Test every link or QR code from the actual customer experience before sharing it.
Add the request to your post-purchase email
Add the Upload Page URL to the post-purchase system you already use, such as Shopify Email or your email automation platform. Send the request after the order has arrived and the customer has had a reasonable chance to use the product. The appropriate delay depends on what you sell.

Adapt the wording to your product and terms. The button should describe the action and link directly to the upload page. If you offer an incentive, state its conditions clearly and avoid implying that submission guarantees a reward or publication.
Test the entire path as a customer
- Send the email to a test address.
- Open it on a phone and select the photo-upload button.
- Confirm that the correct Upload Page opens.
- Submit a test photo and wait for the confirmation.
- Open Upload Pages in Socialphotos and confirm that the test appears under the expected Source.
Testing the complete email-to-upload path catches broken links, unclear instructions, and form settings before customers see them.
Review submissions before displaying them
Receiving a photo does not automatically publish it. Review incoming content in Upload Pages and choose what belongs on your storefront.
- Use Add To Gallery to feature selected content in a Page Gallery.
- On Advanced or Premium, use Tag Product to make content shoppable and associate it with an installed Product Gallery.
- Video display requires Premium.
This review step lets you check the image, caption, customer information, and product relevance before shoppers see it.
Frequently asked questions
Do customers need Instagram to submit a photo?
No. A direct Upload Page works without Instagram or another social account. Instagram can remain a separate content source for customers who choose to post there.
Do customers need to log in to Shopify?
No. Anyone with the Upload Page link can open the form and submit content. Because recipients can forward the link, share it only with the audience you intend to invite.
Can I request photos through a package insert or QR code?
Yes. Use the same Upload Page URL as the destination for a QR code. Test the printed code on a phone before producing the final insert.
Will submitted photos appear in my Shopify gallery immediately?
No. Uploads remain in Socialphotos for review. You decide which submissions to add to a page gallery or tag to a product.
What is the difference between an Upload Page and a gallery upload button?
An Upload Page is a dedicated destination that you can share in an email, message, or QR code. A gallery upload button lets a shopper submit from a gallery already displayed on your storefront. Both routes keep incoming submissions separate until you curate them.
Set up the first request
Begin with one product or customer segment and one upload page. Test the request yourself, review the first submissions, and then decide whether to add it to more post-purchase messages.
